The crash occurred when a Ford pickup truck that was driving towards Brooklyn crashed into the back of a Nissan. The Nissan was pushed into the median while the Ford struck a Volkswagen and pushed it into a barrier. The Volkswagen then hit an SUV, which struck another SUV, which then struck a Jeep.
Hambas was in the Volkswagen, which caught fire.

Most vehicle fires are not the result of crashes, but vehicle fires that are the result of crashes tend to be the deadliest. Only 4 percent of vehicle fires were caused by crashes, but those fires accounted for about 60 percent of all vehicle fire fatalities.
When car fires start, it is important to pull over as soon as possible and to turn the vehicle off. Everyone should exit the vehicle and keep their distance. Never return for any forgotten items. Stay about 100 feet away from the vehicle, and away from traffic.
