New York State has invested $110 million into a Pedestrian Safety Action Plan which uses a combination of methods to decrease the number of pedestrians killed in the state. The plan includes law enforcement efforts, engineering solutions, and education to make pedestrians safer on the state’s roadways. The plan targets the areas that present the greatest risks and where pedestrian accidents occur most frequently.

Across the United States, pedestrian fatalities have risen to levels that are at a 25-year high. Some possible reasons for the spike in fatalities include a rise in drugged driving, mostly from marijuana use, and the prevalence of smartphones which cause many cases of distracted driving.
