WEST FARMS, NY- According to Bronx.news12.com, a vehicle on Southern Boulevard struck a man. The incident took place at about 6:30 in the evening.
Witnesses to the crash reported hearing the loud bang and then rushing to the aid of the man who was hit. While they were waiting for police, witnesses used flashing lights on their phones to provide a warning to drivers approaching the scene.
The witnesses claim that they had to block the driver from fleeing the scene.
The victim was transported to the St. Barnabas Hospital where he was said to be in critical condition.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that in 2015, 5,376 pedestrians died in accidents with motor vehicles in the United States. The numbers indicate that about once every 1.6 hours, a pedestrian is killed by a vehicle in the United States.
Most pedestrians are killed in accidents that happen in urban areas, outside of intersections, at night. The people at the greatest risk of sustaining injuries or deaths in a crash are older adults and children. About 19 percent of all pedestrian accidents involve people who are 65-year-old or more.
Another major risk factor involves alcohol consumption. In close to half of all fatal pedestrian crashes, wither the driver, or the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol. Pedestrians were under the influence in more of these crashes than drivers. In fact, one out of three deadly pedestrian crashes involved a pedestrian who had a blood-alcohol level that met or was above the legal limit for drivers.
