Box Truck Pedestrian Accident
NEW YORK CITY, NY – According to an online news article posted on nydailynews.com, a bicyclist delivering food and a pedestrian were struck and killed by a box truck in the Upper East Side. The fatal collision happened on Third Avenue at East 61st Street. The fatal collision occurred at around 9:30 in the morning. The report states that a box truck was traveling westbound when it struck the victims and struck a fire hydrant, police stated.
The box truck driver told the investigating officer that his accelerator pedal became stuck while he turned north on Third Avenue. Both of the accident victims were in the street’s crosswalk at the time of the accident.
The driver had finished a delivery and jumped back into the truck. As he began to drive away, his fellow employee was not all the way in the truck, and the passenger fell from the box truck and injured his ankle.
According to law enforcement, the driver was arrested. However, he hasn’t been criminally charged. The report states that the box truck driver submitted to and passed his breath alcohol test. The driver refused to have his mouth swabbed for additional testing.
The victims were transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center where they both tragically passed away.
This is the second fatal crash in the past ten days that involves a delivery truck on the Upper East Side.
265 people, including 14 delivery employees, were killed on New York City streets this year.
