BROOKLYN, New York — An 81-year-old man struck by a car about ten days ago in Brooklyn has died. NYPD officers said that he was walking on 13th Avenue and 53rd Street around 10:00 p.m. and was struck by a car. Police said that when they arrived at the scene of the crash, they were directed by witnesses to the man lying in the road. Witnesses also said that the man suffered severe head trauma according to a news report appearing on PIX 11. Police have not charged the driver of the car that hit the man to this point. It is not clear whether the investigation is still open.
NYPD accident officers said that the 81-year-old man died a little more than one week after he was pummeled by a car in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn. Apparently, the man died from massive head trauma sustained in the collision. The operator of the car, who was not identified in the article appearing on the PIX 11 website, struck the pedestrian as the car executed a left turn. The police did not say if the man was walking in the crosswalk or if the traffic signals permitted the pedestrian to cross at that time.
New York City has been deadly for pedestrians to this point in 2020. The man who died in Brooklyn is one of several pedestrians and bicycle riders struck and killed on New York City streets. The trend continued into the New Year from 2019. 2019 was a year in which New York City experienced more pedestrian deaths than in several years prior. This digression comes in spite of the Mayor’s office’s Vision Zero plan. Under the Mayor’s Vision Zero plan, New York City’s brass wants to eliminate all traffic deaths. Oslo, Norway, actually accomplished its goal in 2019. Furthermore, one only person died in a traffic accident at all in Oslo in 2019.
