Reckless driver
BORO PARK, NY – According to the bklyner.com, a driver put the lives of school children in danger when he jumped onto the curb and drove down the sidewalk to avoid waiting for a school bus.
The incident was caught on video and Dov Hikind, a former Assemblyman, went on Twitter to call for the arrest of the reckless driver.
People who watched the images have been calling for the person to have their license revoked. A representative of Transportation Alternative, a group dedicated to making the roads safer in the city, said that it was difficult to “imagine a more egregious display of New York City car culture at work,” continuing to point out the incredible entitlement a driver must feel to take their vehicle onto the sidewalk while children were there and trying to get to school.
Shockingly, other drivers have also driven onto sidewalks to avoid waiting for school buses. Just last September a driver in Missouri was arrested after jumping the curb and driving on the sidewalk while children were attempting to board their school bus.
The incident comes after a string of fatal pedestrian accidents near school buses took place last October. The tragic deaths highlighted the importance of following the laws intended to protect school children and school buses. Across the country, many drivers fail to abide by the laws which require them to stop behind a school bus that is picking up or dropping of children. While school buses are some of the safest vehicles on the road, even the best-designed buses cannot protect children from irresponsible and reckless drivers who put them at risk when they are getting on or off the bus.
