Drunk driver crashes into police
MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A person is under arrest for suspicion of drunk driving after running down a sergeant with the New York Police Department. A photograph appearing in an article published by the New York Daily News depicts a horrific scene. The photo shows the male sergeant on the pavement laying across the double-yellow lines, with what appears to be blood behind his head and another officer standing over his superior officer. The sergeant was trying to clear a crowd that had gathered near a supermarket near Tenth Avenue and W. 207th Street just after 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. The suspected who collided with the sergeant was apprehended and criminally charged.
A police sergeant who was attempting to restore peace and quiet to the Inwood section of Manhattan in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning was severely injured when the person police accused of being drunk drove into the sergeant. The sergeant was a member of a group attempting to stop a 23-year-old man who was driving a Dodge Charger. The driver of the Charger attempted to speed past the ground of officers. The sergeant barely escaped a direct hit. The auto struck the sergeant in the hand and shoulder. The impact spun him around and threw him to the ground violently.
The sergeant sustained serious injuries from the impact of the Charger in the pedestrian accident. The initial reports indicate that the sergeant sustained a broken collarbone, at a minimum. There were no other reports of injuries even though the photograph appearing in the New York Daily News appears to show some blood behind the sergeant’s head.
The sergeant’s fellow officers stopped the driver of the Charger from inflicting additional serious injuries. Police arrested the 23-year-old operator and charged him with several crimes, including drunk and impaired driving, along with reckless endangerment. Police said that the person they arrested was originally from Brooklyn.
