BABYLON VILLAGE, Long Island, N.Y. — A bicycle rider was mowed down by person police say was highly intoxicated and who fled the scene. According to an article published in Newsday, the male bicycle rider was severely injured when the hit-and-run motorist ran down the man on the bicycle. The crash occurred in the parking lot adjacent to the Babylon Village baseball fields on Locust Avenue on Sunday afternoon around 4:40. The Suffolk Police identified the motorist as a 49-year-old woman from Deer Park. Suffolk Police claim she left the scene of the collision but was apprehended a short while later. Suffolk Police charged her with driving while intoxicated.
The investigating law enforcement officers told Newsday that a 60-year-old man was riding his bicycle through the parking lot when the 49-year-old woman operating a 2019 Chevy Trax collided with him. First responders soon arrived. They transported the bike rider to the emergency department at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center located in West Islip. The officers investigating the case reported that the rider sustained serious injuries and was believed to be non-life-threatening as result of the bicycle hit-by-car accident.
The vehicle allegedly involved in the crash did not remain at the scene. The woman drove off in her 2019 Chevrolet Trax. However, the woman returned to the scene of the crash approximately 30 minutes later. She was driven there by another individual in a different car. Officers went to her home in Deer Park and found the 2019 Chevrolet Trax in her driveway. Police seized the suspect vehicle and impounded it for a safety examination.
In addition to DWI, the Deer Park woman faces criminal charges for leaving the scene of a crash after the victim suffered a serious physical injury. The woman could not bail out of jail on Sunday. She was detained and brought to the First District Court in Central Islip on Monday for her arraignment. There was no information provided about the bond or whether she had an attorney.
