MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A delivery driver was riding an electric bicycle sustained critical injuries after crashing into an elderly pedestrian injured Central Park. The New York Daily News announced the crash happened during afternoon hours on East Drive and a short distance away from the Loeb Boathouse. Three additional bicycle crashes occurred on East Drive in the same vicinity as the electrical bicycle accident. The bicycle operator continues to recover but is listed by Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition. The pedestrian, however, sustained injuries described by the Weill Cornell Medical Center as minor. At least three other bicycle riders needed emergency medical treatment from injuries suffered after crashing.
An eyewitness told the Daily News the accident involving a 77-year-old pedestrian and a 43-year-old man riding an electric bicycle was severe. The witness said the location of the accident appeared to be in a crosswalk on a road that traverses the park from E. 72ndStreet to W. 72ndStreet. The witness stated that the older man began to cross the road and the bicycle went straight. The witness said that the e-bike rider appeared to be badly injured. There was no information about whether he was wearing a helmet when he and the pedestrian collided. Transportation officials began examining the lights at the crosswalk to determine whether they were working properly. Police are still investigating the e-bike crash.
While first responders tended to the e-bike and pedestrian collision, two bicycle riders crashed into each other, only about 100 feet away from the location where the bicycle and pedestrian collided. One of the bicycle riders in that incident required medical attention. EMS transported her to a local medical facility for treatment. Her medical condition is not known.
A few minutes later, a bicycle rider crashed while riding a short distance from where EMS tended to another injured rider. Police said he was looking at his cellphone when he fell from his saddle. That rider did not appear to have sustained any injuries.
