HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – As reported online by longisland.news12.com, a man has been arrested and charged for allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian and then leaving the scene of the accident.
On April 25, 2019, a 70-year-old man was crossing Merrick Road at the intersection of Blossom Health Avenue when he was tragically struck by a vehicle that fled the scene of the accident. The 70-year-old pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. Police later located the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run accident in Hewlett, which was a 2012 gray Nissan Sentra. Police then identified the 48-year-old Lynbrook driver who allegedly struck and killed the 70-year-old pedestrian, subsequently fleeing the scene of the accident.
The 48-year-old Lynbrook man currently faces a criminal charge of fleeing the scene of an accident with death, and the man’s bail was set at $40,000. At an initial court appearance, the attorney for the Lynbrook man stated that the man had a low IQ and was unaware that he struck a pedestrian with his vehicle. The accused man is due back in court on April 30, 2019.
Many hit-and-run accidents in New York as well as throughout the rest of the United States do not result in arrests and criminal charges. Unfortunately, many hit-and-run drivers are able to successfully elude police after fleeing the scene of an accident. However, in the case involving the 48-year-old accused Lynbrook man and the 70-year-old fatally injured pedestrian, law enforcement officials were able to follow leads and find the person they believe is responsible for an innocent man’s death.
