Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Massapequa
MASSAPEQUA, Long Island, New York — Police on Long Island responded to a devastating crash around 6:45 p.m. Friday involving two pedestrians and a motorcycle rider. The incident happened on Merrick Road, near the intersection with Glen Road. According to an online report appearing on NewYorkCBSLocal.com, a 67-year-old male pedestrian died, while the other pedestrian sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The motorcycle operator, on the other hand, was severely hurt in the crash and required a med flight to a local trauma center. Police say that the 22-year-old motorcycle rider remains in critical condition. The police continue to investigate the incident and have not arrested anyone concerning the crash at this time.
A news report appearing on Long Island News 12 related that the 67-year-old man tried to cross Merrick Road with his wife when the 22-year-old motorcycle rider heading west on Merrick Road struck them. The report indicated that the man and his wife were going to a restaurant across the street from where they parked to attend a birthday party.
The restaurant owner happened to be standing outside and witnessed the entire tragic incident unfold. The man was traumatized by what he saw. He told Long Island News 12 that he could not sleep because every time he closed his eyes, he observed the accident replay over and over again. The incident saddened the restaurant owner, but he also said that he is not surprised that an accident happened in front of his restaurant because Merrick Road is busy, and people drive too fast for the conditions.
Newsreel footage showed the carnage left behind by the violent collision between the pedestrians and motorcycle. The video showed the motorcycle at rest a distance from the point of contact. The video also showed that debris from the motorcycle scattered all across the roadway. There was no crosswalk where the couple attempted to cross the street.
