NEW YORK, NY- Nydailynews.com writes that a child and his mother exited a Dunkin Donuts and began to cross First Avenue in a marked crosswalk when a driver making a left turn struck them, killing the child.
The driver operating the Ford F-250 truck did not have a driver’s license. A worker at the Dunkin Donuts said the mother and child had just left and said goodbye when the crash occurred. The woman said she ran out to try to help, but the child was already dead.
The witness said that she tried to comfort the boy’s hysterical mother until paramedics took both to the hospital where the boy was declared dead.
The boy lived nearby, and he and his mother frequently started their mornings at the Dunkin Donuts.
The driver who killed the child fled the scene but returned a short while later, and police arrested him.
Another witness saw the crash and looked away, afraid to see the aftermath. She said she could hear the screaming.
Reports indicate that the boy was from Mexico and that his father is a musician. A neighbor said the child was always very happy. The boy had two older brothers.
Police charged the 59-year-old driver with failure to yield, aggravated unlicensed driving, and failure to exercise due care.
Studies indicate that drivers who do not have valid licenses are more likely to be involved in deadly car crashes. One study that took place in California found that the rate of deadly crashes among unlicensed drivers was nearly three times as high as that of properly licensed drivers.
