Fatal Times Square Pedestrian Accident
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK – A news story posted on Explica.co reports that a female pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a taxi in Times Square. The 57-year-old woman, who was visiting the tourist center of New York, was trying to cross 8th Avenue when she was hit. The taxi driver was heading eastbound along West 46th Street at around 4 in the morning when the taxi collided with the victim.
According to the NYPD, the officers responded to a 911 call concerning a fatally wounded woman by a vehicle and lying on the road. The victim was transported to the Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital. She was tragically pronounced dead later that morning.
The NYPD stated that the taxi driver remained at the fatal pedestrian accident scene. No criminal charges or arrests were filed immediately as the New York Police Department investigated the fatal collision. Moreover, the identity of the victim was not made public at this time.
New York City officials and the New York Police Department have been warning pedestrians about the rise in pedestrian accidents post-pandemic. According to several news stories, road accidents have erupted throughout the city. One reason for the accidents is that with fewer vehicles on the streets during the pandemic, the incidents of speeding and reckless driving on NYC streets have become more prevalent, according to data provided in a recent report published by transalt.org/toofast.
However, motor vehicles are not the only threat to pedestrians in NYC. A famous actress passed away recently after she was struck by a hit-and-run scooter. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, there have been more riders, walkers, cyclists, and delivery people in the street.
The purchase and rental of bicycles, e-bike, scooter, and motorcycles have been experiencing significant growth throughout New York City. Unfortunately, many of these riders are not respecting traffic lights, ride on sidewalks meant for pedestrians, and ride in the wrong direction of the roads. Moreover, extended outdoor seating for restaurants has crowded already narrow sidewalk space designed for pedestrians.
