
Four teens struck by vehicle
GREEN ISLAND, New York — A white sedan plowed into four teenagers who were trying to cross State Route 787 in the Village of Green Island. The collision killed one of the boys and critically injured another. The other two teenagers, one male and one female were also seriously hurt. The emergency calls reporting the accident came in around 11:00 p.m. to the Albany County Sheriff’s Department according to the Times Union. Two other teens witnessed the crash but were not hit by the car. All of the teenagers who were hit by the car were reportedly friends who attended the Heatly School in the Green Island Union Free School District. Educators canceled school Monday to allow students to meet with counselors.
Witnesses to the crash told deputies from the Albany County Sheriff’s Department that six teens walked from a gas station in nearby Cohoes toward Green Island. The group of teens tried to run across State Route 787 at the intersection of Tibbits Avenue just before a car entered the intersection. Sadly, a white sedan traveling south on State Route 787 crashed into four of the teens who could not make it in time. Two teens avoided the collision.
Deputies reported that a 17-year-old male died from injuries sustained in the crash. Also, another 17-year-old male sustained critical injuries from the collision. A 15-year-old female pedestrian sustained a broken leg in the accident, and a 16-year-old boy suffered a serious neck injury.
Officers from the Green Island Police Department and Cohoes Police Department raced to the scene to care for the stricken teens.
EMS transported the teen who died to Samaritan Hospital. He was declared deceased there. The other injured teens received transportation to Albany Medical Center Hospital. The 17-year-old male who is in critical condition required emergency surgery Sunday. The medical condition of the other two pedestrians hit by the car was not updated by press time.
