BROOKLYN, NY – June 8, 2020 – According to an online news report published on NYdailynews.com, an SUV driver became enraged by protestors and allegedly plowed his SUV into Brooklyn protestors. The incident occurred on Saturday night. Law enforcement was able to apprehend the driver and place him under arrest. The 44-year-old man from Astoria, Queens, New York, allegedly drove his 2020 Volkswagen SUV up onto a curb and hit the protestors. The accident occurred at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and St Johns Place in Crown Heights. The incident happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, according to police. Authorities stated that the driver allegedly struck a bicyclist, numerous demonstrators, and then he fled the vehicular attack on the pedestrians. The 24-year old bicyclist, who was hit by the SUV driver, sustained an injury to their ankle and was transported to the King’s County Hospital for treatment.
As the SUV swerved toward the group of protestors, some of the people at the scene began to shout, “Watch out!” The SUV driver hit the cyclist, and some of the witnesses attempted to stop the SUV by jumping on top of the motor vehicle. Police arrested the suspect after the man’s SUV was pointed out by some of the witnesses of the collision. Some of the other protestors sustained injuries as a result of the crash.
The suspect is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless endangerment. The article reports that a friend of the suspect believes the suspect was probably scared for his safety, panicked, and then caused the crash because he was in fear for his safety.
