NEW YORK – According to the Gothamist.com, a green cab hit a pedestrian who was walking on a sidewalk in Queens killing the 26-year-old woman. The driver was apprehended but later released from the police department without any charges having been filed.
The driver has been identified as a 55-year-old man. The investigation indicates that the victim was walking along the sidewalk when the cab drove out of the parking lot of a Mobile Station and struck her.
The driver then left the scene, but the police caught up with him just a few blocks away, and he was taken into custody.
The victim’s family says that the young woman was on her way to pick her mother up in Manhattan. She worked for Hell’s Kitchen, Mamacita’s Bar and Grill, which is owned by her family.
The victim’s father expressed his shock at the driver not having been charged considering that the incident was a hit-and-run. Witnesses to the scene stated that the driver who struck her was behaving erratically after the incident. Reports indicate the driver traveled about half of a block on the sidewalk and one witness stated that the scene looked like something “out of Grand Theft Auto.”
Another witness reached into the driver’s vehicle and removed the keys.
The victim was transported to the Elmhurst Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The investigation is still underway, and the district attorney would not state the reason that the driver was not arrested for driving on the sidewalk or fleeing the scene of a deadly pedestrian incident.
