ISLANDIA, Long Island, New York — A good Samaritan died after a young woman driving a sports utility vehicle crashed into him as the man tried to assist another motorist. A call reporting the crash came into Suffolk County Police around 6:20 on a Saturday evening. According to the preliminary investigation, the fatal crash happened on Motor Parkway in Islandia, between the intersections of Hoffman Lane and Veterans Memorial Highway, per a report appearing in the Daily Voice. The man killed in the crash was a 57-year-old from Bay Shore. A representative of the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner declared the man deceased from his injuries at the scene. Investigators continue to work on the details of the crash.
Suffolk Police say that an 18-year-old young man from Bay Shore drove a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder on Motor Parkway. The vehicle stopped running in the middle of the westbound lanes of the road. The victim of the crash pulled up to the Pathfinder in a 2003 Toyota minivan and offered to help. The victim had tools in his truck, so he and the driver of the Pathfinder walked behind the minivan to select the appropriate tools when a 22-year-old female driving a 2001 Dodge Durango plowed into the two people walking near the rear of the minivan.
The driver of the Pathfinder sustained serious injuries that medics described as “non-life threatening.” Medics transported the driver of the Pathfinder to Stony Brook Hospital.
Suffolk Police continue to investigate the fatal crash. Police impounded all vehicles and performed safety checks on them all. The accident investigators did not release any information about the results of the safety check. Detectives from Suffolk County’s Fourth Squad asked for help from the public to provide information about the crash. There was no information on whether investigators would issue criminal charges against the 22-year-old driver of the 2001 Dodge Durango.
