Man Killed by SUV in Lindenhurst, NY

LINDENHURST, Long Island, N.Y. — A man attempting to cross East John Street and North Indiana Avenue in Lindenhurst died after a sports utility vehicle ran him over. The crash occurred on Friday around 6:10 p.m., according to the Daily Voice. The operator of the SUV, a 42-year-old male from Lindenhurst, was not hurt in the crash. Suffolk Police have not charged the driver with the death of the pedestrian to this point, and the investigation into the accident by Suffolk County police detectives continues.  Suffolk County Police detectives did not release the name or the age of the victim in the accident until they were able to notify the victim’s next-of-kin.

Suffolk County police accident investigators from the Department’s First Squad were able to determine that the 42-year-old Lindenhurst resident, who drove a 2005 Mercedes-Benz SUV westerly on East John Street, crashed into the male pedestrian who tried to cross the road at the intersection of North Indiana Avenue. A physician’s assistant working with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office arrived on the scene and subsequently pronounced the victim deceased.

First squad detectives said they impounded the SUV to conduct a safety check. They did not disclose the outcome of their inquiry. There was no additional information available about the crash. However, officers have asked the public to contact First Squad detectives with any information they might have regarding the collision.

Pedestrian deaths continue to rise in the nation and in the State of New York as well. To illustrate, there were 112 pedestrian deaths in 2017 in New York State. The data collected from 2018 suggest that 117 pedestrians died in vehicular crashes. Therefore, the death toll increased in New York State by four percent. The national average for the same time frame was an increase of three percent.  The numbers standing along might not seem significant until they are put into proper context. Each numeral represents one grieving family who will never be the same ever again because of the death of their loved one while walking.
