Around 6,000 pedestrians died on the road in 2017, which just about matched the number of people killed the previous year. The numbers are the highest seen in in the United States in decades. There are many reasons for the increased number of pedestrians being killed. One simple factor is that there are more vehicles on the road now because of lower gas prices and a strong economy. Another factor is that people are buying bigger vehicles. SUVs and pickup trucks are more dangerous to pedestrians than smaller vehicles like cars. The taller shape of these vehicles means that they hit higher on a person’s body and cause injuries to a person’s head and torso instead of their lower extremities.
The progress made in New York City indicates that it is possible to take steps to reduce the number of traffic fatalities. New York has been steadily reducing the number of traffic fatalities that occur in the city each year by taking steps to make the streets safer. Lowering speed limits is one way to reduce the risk of fatal pedestrian accidents greatly.
