Pedestrian accidents on S.I.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police officers from the New York City Police Department and crew members from the Fire Department of New York responded to a pedestrian accident in Staten Island on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, around 9:08 a.m. in the Graniteville neighborhood. According to SILIVE.com, the incident occurred in front of 950 Richmond Avenue and on the same block as NYPD’s 121stPrecinct. The condition of the victim was not made available by a spokesperson from FDNY. Police did not identify the vehicle involved. However, SILIVE.com noted that a white Kia bearing Virginia license plates was observed in the area of the crash and is possibly involved. There was no additional information available.
Tuesday’s pedestrian accident is another in a string of pedestrian crashes in the New York area in 2018 and 2019, mainly on Long Island. Not much has changed in a decade. The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a report suggesting that Route 25, also known as Middle County Road, is the most dangerous road in Suffolk County New York in October of 2008. The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released its report in October. By the middle of December, a man died on Route 25 in Coram while riding in his wheelchair on the side of the road. Civic leaders complained that the man might not have been killed in the accident if the road was built with sufficient sidewalks. The Tri-State Transportation Campaign cited Route 27 as the most dangerous road for pedestrians in Suffolk County with 12 pedestrian deaths.
Nassau County did not fare any better ten years ago. The Hempstead Turnpike was the most dangerous road in Nassau County at that time, with 15 pedestrian deaths reported in two years. Routes 27 and 27, along with Merrick Road, were also noted to be highly dangerous roads. Civic leaders asked transportation officials to connect sidewalks and make the road safer for all users, especially pedestrians and bicycle riders.
