New York Pedestrian Death Lawsuits

According to an online news report posted on NYPost.com, fatal pedestrian crashes in New York are surging in 2022. The news article states that the number of pedestrians struck and killed in traffic-related crashes has increased by 44 percent. The report states that the number of New Yorkers who were tragically killed in traffic-related crashes soared in the first three months of 2022. According to a new study published by a transportation advocacy group, the number of traffic fatalities in New York has increased at levels not seen in several years. The report states that in the first quarter of 2022, 59 people were struck and killed in New York City. This is a 44% increase over the first quarter of 2021.

The number of traffic deaths is the highest number of fatalities on New York City streets since 2014, when former Mayor Bill de Blasio launch his Vision Zero initiative.

The study published by Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets reveals that 50% of those people killed were pedestrians. Danny Harris, with Transportation Alternatives, stated that too many pedestrians are killed while crossing the street or waiting for the bus, and the number of deaths is increasing. Mr. Harris helped urge Albany lawmakers to permit Mayor Eric Adams to expand the city’s camera enforcement program to combat traffic deaths in New York City.

In one recent fatal crash, a person riding an electric scooter was struck and killed by an MTA bus at the intersection of Seneca Avenue and Gates Avenue. The electric scooter driver sustained a severe head injury. It is accidents like these that safety advocates want to stop.

In another crash, a fifteen-year-old student was struck and killed by a driver who fled the crash scene at Bedford Avenue and Avenue P in Brooklyn, New York.

Some safety advocates blame law enforcement for not cracking down on speeding and reckless driving in New York City. NYPD statistics demonstrate their police officers issued 54% fewer traffic citations in the first two months of 2022. However, it is not clear how aggressive law enforcement officers have been in 2022.

According to Vin Barone, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation, safety is their number one priority, and their agency has been working hard to reduce traffic deaths. Vin believes that more needs to be done to stop traffic fatalities, but the agency is working hard to increase the number of safety measures and stop traffic fatalities in New York City.

Recent crash data indicates that 50% of people killed in traffic crashes in New York City were pedestrians.
