MIDDLE ISLAND, NY – According to Longisland.com, a woman died in a crash that took place in Middle Island, New York. The victim was described as a 46-year-old woman who was traveling on foot along Rocky Point Road close to Bailey Road.
The victim was hit by a 2008 Kia sedan that was driving south on Rocky Point Road. The impact caused the victim to be thrown into the air and strike a 2005 Dodge that was in the center median and stopped.
The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner declared the victim dead at the scene of the crash. The identity of the victim has not been reported.
The driver of the Kia was 20-year-old Morning Yancey who was driving on a suspended license at the time of the crash. The police issued Yancey a summons. Liam Toman, 20, was driving the Dodge. Neither of the drivers was hurt in the accident.
The police are requesting that anyone with information about the crash come forward.
According to the chicagotribune.com, over 34,000 people are convicted of driving on revoked or suspended licenses every year in the United States. The AAA reports that about twenty percent of deadly car crashes each year involve a motorist who is unlicensed or driving on an invalid license. Between the years 2007 and 2009, the death toll from accidents involving unlicensed drivers was about 22,000 people.
Many people believe that the problem is partially the result of the laws being too lax. Drivers repeatedly get behind the wheel after convictions for driving without a license, and rarely suffer any real consequences.
