Accident on Shepard Ave in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NY – A news report posted on patch.com states that a 38-year-old man was tragically struck and killed while he was attempting to cross a street in Brooklyn, New York. According to the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad, the man was crossing Shepard Avenue by Pitkin Avenue at approximately 10:15 PM in the evening. The victim was hit by a white vehicle, which was heading down Pitkin Avenue. The driver did not stop after striking the victim with their motor vehicle.
The victim was transported to Brookdale Hospital, where the victim tragically passed away this past Monday. According to the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad who is investigating the fatal pedestrian hit-and-run accident, the collision is the third fatal hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn over the past couple of weeks.
According to a news report on NYTimes.com, more and more drivers are engaging in dangerous driving behavior such as speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving. The report states that these three behaviors have led to a rapid increase in pedestrian accidents.
Last year, 221 people died in accidents in the main New York City boroughs, five years after Mayor Bill de Blasio’s pledge to eradicate all traffic fatalities. The Mayor’s Vision Zero strategy does not appear to be working. However, the number of fatal accidents in the city is a driving behavior problem. A problem Zero Vision would not be able to prevent.
Mr. de Blasio stated that by adding more speed cameras and redesigning the city’s streets, city officials must figure out a way to train drivers so they have a sense of “maximum vigilance” each and every time drivers get behind the driver’s wheel. Safety Advocates want to add more speeding cameras and stiff penalties to discourage street racing, reckless driving, and drunk driving.
