Struck by Pickup Truck
SUFFOLK COUNTY, Long Island, N.Y. — According to a report filed by Newsday, Suffolk Police say that a man walking on Suffolk Avenue in Central Islip died after being hit by a pickup truck around six in the morning. Detectives from Suffolk Police Department’s Third Squad are proceeding with the investigation and have asked the public to provide information about the deadly crash. The police have not issued charges at this juncture of the investigation.
Suffolk Police say that a 41-year-old man was driving a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck collided with a pedestrian just after six on Tuesday. The accident scene appeared to be on Suffolk Avenue, just east of Lowell Avenue. Officers said that the man who was killed was attempting to cross Suffolk Avenue when the truck hit him. Officers say that a physician’s assistant working for the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the accident scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead according to the Patch.com. Officials have declined to release any identifying information about the pedestrian who died until authorities notify the man’s nearest relatives. The 41-year-old driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene of the accident. The driver is reportedly from Central Islip. He was not injured in the crash.
As the investigation in to the fatal crash continues, police seized the 2011 Toyota Tacoma so that investigators can perform a safety check of the vehicle. Police will determine whether the safety mechanisms such as headlights, taillights, directional signals, braking systems, and the like worked correctly at the time of the crash.
Approximately 30 percent of all fatal accidents in New York State involved pedestrians. According to research performed by a New York State agency, about 9 percent of all deadly pedestrian accidents happen between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. while 10 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents occurred between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.
