Police Hunt for Driver Who Fled from Crash

FARMINGVILLE, Long Island, N.Y. — Suffolk County Police officers opened an investigation into a pedestrian hit-and-run crash Thursday evening around 10:30 p.m. When officers arrived on-scene reported by WPIX 11 at the intersection of North Morris Avenue and Portion Road, they found a 24-year-old man from Farmingville suffering from severe injuries caused by a collision with a motor vehicle. Police and EMS raced the badly injured man to a nearby hospital. Officers were unable to determine right away why the young man sustained such serious injuries. Their investigation revealed that a motor vehicle that fled from the accident scene caused the man’s injuries. Police continue to investigate the hit-and-run collision.

Nationally, 6,238 people lost their lives while walking on U.S. roads in 2018. The number represents a three-percent increase over 2017, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the NHTSA. The number of pedestrian deaths in 2018 was the most recorded in any one year since 1990.

The NHTSA, among other federal and state agencies, has a vested interest in making our streets safer. The NHTSA recommends that drivers maintain a vigilant watch for pedestrians at all times. Additionally, the NHTSA suggests that operators use caution when traveling in conditions like bad weather or at night when seeing is most difficult. Drivers must always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk and must be extremely careful when approaching crosswalks so that the driver could bring the vehicle to a stop in the event that a person walks into the crosswalk without warning. Similarly, passing another vehicle in a crosswalk area is highly dangerous and should be avoided.

The NHTSA also reminds motor vehicle operators to drive slower in thickly settled areas as well as in school zones. Furthermore, the NHTSA cautions drivers against driving after consuming alcohol or taking drugs. The NHTSA also reminds motorists to be extremely careful when backing, especially in crowded areas, when people could get in the path of the vehicle without warning.
