Sidewalk pedestrian accident in Queens
QUEENS, New York —WPIX 11 reported that the 34-year-old pedestrian sustained critical injuries after a minivan hopped the curb on a Queens street and hit the man while walking. The freak accident happened around 5:20 p.m. The man who was struck by the out-of-control minivan was walking alongside a woman at the time he was hit. There was no information forthcoming about her condition. The accident remains under investigation with New York City police detectives. The investigating officers did not announce whether they sought criminal charges or civil penalties against the minivan’s driver when the incident was initially reported.
New York City Police Department accident investigators said that the strange accident happened on 82nd Street near the intersection with 35th Avenue in the borough of Queens. Officers said that the driver of the minivan, who police identified only as a 48-year-old man, tried to park the vehicle along the curb when suddenly the man lost control over the Honda minivan. The minivan hopped the curb, struck the male pedestrian, and then plowed into a metal staircase. Investigators told the media that the 48-year-old driver stayed with his car at the scene of the accident.
News reports described the accident scene in gory detail. Reporters said that a substantial amount of blood appeared on the sidewalk in the location where the minivan hit the pedestrian. New York City EMS technicians transported the severely injured man to NYC Health+ Hospitals/Elmhurst. Two other people received treatment at the hospital for extreme emotional distress. Police officers did not identify those two individuals or say how they might be connected to the incident. The hospital did not release updated information concerning the medical condition of the injured victim.
The police have not concluded their investigation into this tragic accident.
