Street Bollards Designed to Protect Pedestrians May Cause More Accidents

Street Bollards May Cause More Accidents
NYC – A news report posted on norwoodnews.org states that it may be too soon to ascertain if a New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) bollard program aimed at lowering the number of pedestrian accidents will succeed in the long-term. However, preliminary findings reveal that the program might be causing more motor vehicle accidents.
The placement of bollards, two-foot-high, cylindrical-shaped barriers installed along with traffic islands and streets around New York City, have become a hot topic of discussion amongst Bronx drivers. The Department of Transportation initiated the pedestrian safety bollard program at the end of 2019. One of the main reasons why the bollards are causing motor vehicle accidents is because many drivers do not see the bollards.
The latest accident in The Bronx involving a bollard and a motor vehicle occurred last Sunday at around 2 in the morning. A woman was driving her SUV and accidentally hit a bollard, and her SUV flipped over. The accident happened on Van Nest Avenue at East Tremont Avenue in the Van Nest neighborhood in The Bronx.
According to one bollard accident witness, these accidents happen often, and in many incidents, the vehicle dangerously rolls over. The witness stated that the recent Van Nest Avenue accident is a common problem as vehicles turn left from Van Nest Avenue onto East Tremont Avenue. He also recommended that city officials place a sign that warns drivers about the bollards.
Some traffic safety advocates believe that solutions to the problem could include painting the bollards white instead of black, illuminating the bollards with reflectors.
The bollards are designed to deter speeding and prevent motor vehicles from accessing pedestrian areas. However, pedestrian accidents are continuing to rise throughout New York City, and pedestrian accidents where bollards are placed are creating concerns that the barriers pose more risks than benefits.
