STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – According to an online news report on silive.com, traffic-related fatalities have been surging in New York City in 2022. An NYC safe street advocacy organization called Transportation Alternatives has issued a new report that states there have been 59 traffic deaths in New York City during the first quarter of 2022. This was the highest number of first-quarter traffic deaths since Vision Zero was initiated in 2014. The 59 traffic fatalities represent a substantial 44% increase.
Staten Island did not register any traffic deaths in the months of January, February, or March, which is a significant improvement over the first three months of 2021.
So far, New York City is on track to surpass 2021’s total of 273 traffic-related fatalities. This is also the highest annual total since Vision Zero was implemented. This trend could result in four straight years of increasing traffic fatalities in the five NYC boroughs. This has not happened since 1990.
Danny Harris, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, stated that “From children in Queens to seniors in Brooklyn, too many New Yorkers are killed simply waiting for the bus or crossing the street, and the numbers are only increasing.” He also stated that “Our leaders must take steps immediately to save New Yorkers and prevent this year from turning into another record-breaking year for traffic fatalities.”
The largest increases in traffic deaths were observed in Manhattan and Queens. The traffic fatalities increased by 120% and 125%, respectively, in the first three months of 2022.
The report also discovered a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities on streets with posted speed limits that surpass 25 miles per hour. Although less than 10% of New York City streets have speed limits above 25 MPH, but 24% of the traffic fatalities occurred on these streets.
NYC’s Department of Transportation (DOT) stated that city officials claim to be committed to ending the trend of rising roadway deaths on New York City streets. Their plans include implementing safety improvements at more than 1,000 intersections in NYC. According to the DOT, accidents at intersections account for about 70% of all injuries and 50% of all traffic fatalities.
The City Council announced $3.1 billion in funding to redesign dangerous corridors and 1,000 intersections in the city.
