NEW YORK, NY – According to two separate fatal accident news stories posted Thursday evening and Friday morning, two pedestrians were tragically struck and killed in less than 24 hours.
On Thursday, a 71-year-old man from Long Island, New York, was fatally hit by a sports utility vehicle while he was attempting to cross a street. According to police reports, the SUV “rammed” into the man just before 6 p.m. The victim was trying to cross a four-lane residential street close to Hillside Avenue and Cellar Avenue in New Hyde Park when a Hyundai Tucson struck him.
Emergency Medical Service Medics raced the injured senior to a local area hospital for treatment of his life-threatening injuries. The man tragically succumbed to his pedestrian accident-related injuries. According to police, the man only survived about 30 minutes at the hospital.
The Hyundai Tucson’s driver, a 60-year-old, remained at the pedestrian accident scene until law enforcement arrived at the scene to take the driver’s statement. There are no charges filed against the driver, and the Nassau County police are currently investigating the accident. Accident investigators also seized the Hyundai Tucson to conduct a safety and brake check.
According to police, the second fatal pedestrian accident happened Friday morning when a woman was hit and killed by a Con Ed truck on Staten Island, New York.
The 52-year-old woman was crossing the street close to Fingerboard Road and Narrows Road South, a service road leading to the Staten Island Expressway. The crash occurred at around 7:45 a.m. According to the police, the truck “slammed” into the victim, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Con Edison employee who was driving the truck stayed at the accident scene until law enforcement arrived. At this moment, no criminal charges have been filed.
