Hit and run in Ramapo
RAMAPO- N.Y. — A motor vehicle struck two people who were walking on the side of the road at dawn Tuesday, June 4, 2019. According to PatchNew York, the driver sped away from the scene of the crash. Police immediately began searching for a possible suspect based on the leads they developed during their initial investigation. The investigating officers asked the public for assistance in cracking the case. Their investigation continues into the identity of the driver involved and how the crash happened. No update was immediately available regarding the medical conditions of the two pedestrians.
The serenity of the dawn hours Tuesday morning were punctured when an unknown driver slammed into two people walking on the side of Route 45 near Washington Avenue. First responders from the Town of Ramapo tended to the victims. One of the pedestrian victims suffered severe injuries and was transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment. EMS took the other victim to Nyack Hospital with less severe, but still serious injuries.
The collision and subsequent investigation forced police to close Route 45 from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Police request that anyone with any information relating to the collision should call the local police and report what they know.
Motorists are not always at fault for striking a pedestrian. Pedestrians must follow New York laws established to keep them safe. For instance, pedestrians must walk in crosswalks if crosswalks are available. Walking in a crosswalk gives the pedestrian the right of way. However, people attempting to cross the street must remain on the curb until it is safe to enter the street. Also, pedestrians must walk along the side of the road or on the shoulder of the road if there are no sidewalks. Failing to follow these simple rules may endanger a pedestrian and give a driver a defense in a lawsuit subsequent to a vehicular collision with a pedestrian.
