SHOREHAM, Long Island, New York — A vehicle struck and killed a woman while she was walking across Route 25A Sunday evening. Suffolk County police responded to the scene around 6:10 p.m. according to a report in Newsday. Medics transported the stricken woman to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital located in Port Jefferson. The woman succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital. A 36-year-old woman from Rocky Point who was driving a 2018 Hyundai SUV hit the pedestrian. The female motorist was not hurt in the incident. Police impounded the vehicle for a safety check according to their procedure.

Suffolk County Police Detectives assigned to the Seventh Squad began the investigation into the pedestrian’s death on Sunday. The investigating detectives have asked anyone with information to speak with them about the accident. There are no charges issued by police at this time. The police did not discuss the results of the safety check they performed on the suspect vehicle.

The number of pedestrian deaths that have occurred recently on New York City streets and Long Island has prompted elected officials to develop a strategy for reducing pedestrian fatalities. New York City officials suggest that trucking companies must upgrade safety devices on their vehicles to help avoid additional pedestrian and cyclist deaths according to an article appearing on CBS New York’s website.

One city councilman said that all trucks operating in New York City must have side guards installed by 2024. These guards should prevent pedestrians from getting trapped under large trucks. Additionally, trucking companies could install sensors around the vehicle to identify pedestrians and bicycle riders who get too close to the vehicle. The sensor would operate similarly to crash sensors now installed in new cars. The sensors would alert the driver to the presence of pedestrians who walk out into the street but get lost in the blind spots of the trucks.
