The number of pedestrian deaths that have occurred recently on New York City streets and Long Island has prompted elected officials to develop a strategy for reducing pedestrian fatalities. New York City officials suggest that trucking companies must upgrade safety devices on their vehicles to help avoid additional pedestrian and cyclist deaths according to an article appearing on CBS New York’s website.
One city councilman said that all trucks operating in New York City must have side guards installed by 2024. These guards should prevent pedestrians from getting trapped under large trucks. Additionally, trucking companies could install sensors around the vehicle to identify pedestrians and bicycle riders who get too close to the vehicle. The sensor would operate similarly to crash sensors now installed in new cars. The sensors would alert the driver to the presence of pedestrians who walk out into the street but get lost in the blind spots of the trucks.
