BRONX, NY- According to Nydailynews.com, a child sustained critical injuries in a hit-and-run collision in the Bronx on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. The victim’s mother stated that the 6-year-old girl underwent emergency neck surgery following the pedestrian accident.
The victim was identified as Raguiatou Barry. Raguiatou was on her way home from school with her mother and her siblings at the time of the incident. The vehicle struck the girl at about 4:50 p.m. while she was walking across East 172nd Street in Soundview just a block away from the child’s home.
The mother stated that she saw the vehicle just before it struck her child but could not guess how fast it was going. The vehicle was described as being a light gray Jeep or another large vehicle. The driver slowed after hitting Raguiatou, took a second to look in his mirrors and then sped away from the scene. The child was unconscious after being struck. Her mother, Kadiatou Barry said that she accompanied her child in the ambulance.
Raguiatou’s three siblings were there at the time too. They are 10, 9 and 2 years old. Kadiatou said they were all crying for their injured sister.
Kadiatou says she is now hopeful that her daughter will survive the terrible incident. The child did not break any of the bones in her neck, and the doctors have said she has a good chance of living.
The driver has still not been caught. Police are still investigating the crash.
While New York City has managed to cut down on the number of pedestrian fatalities, the city has not been able to stop the high number of hit-and-run crashes. Many of these drivers are never apprehended.
