Dump truck causes serious accident
SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — The driver of a dump truck was critically injured when the air axel of the truck failed and forced the dump truck over the rail of a bridge situated along the side of Interstate 75. The 33-year-old male truck driver was airlifted to a trauma center for life-saving medical treatment. According to NBC 2, the incident happened near milepost 185 on the northbound side of Interstate 75 in Sarasota County, Florida
The dump truck carrying a load of sand spun out of control and crashed Monday. NBC 2 reported that the Florida Highway Patrol released a statement indicating that the right air axel on the dump truck ruptured. The catastrophic failure of the right air axel forced the truck to go into a spin. The truck spun across two lanes of traffic before landing in the soft shoulder of the road. The truck hit a bridge railing that was off the side of the road and rolled over. The cargo bed of the dump truck dislodged and spilled its contents during the rollover.
The 33-year-old dump truck driver sustained severe injuries in the crash. A helicopter airlifted him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment. Information concerning the man’s current health status was not available. Authorities closed the northbound side of I-75 to permit crews to extricate the driver and allow the medical helicopter to land.
Florida interstates and highways are very busy. The roads accommodate a substantial amount of traffic from passenger vehicles as well as construction vehicles, tractor-trailer trucks, and motorcycles. Large volumes of traffic on Florida’s roads, like Interstate-75, can create dangerous driving conditions that lead to accidents. With motorists traveling at speeds of 65 miles per hour or greater, every accident has the potential to kill or maim any involved.
