Commercial truck drivers
USA- Foxbusiness.com writes that the trucking industry is booming, leading to a need for more drivers. As applicants sign up to become truckers, they may be putting themselves in jeopardy and joining one of the deadliest industries in the nation.
Truck drivers and sales workers suffered more deaths than any other industry in 2018, with 966 total fatalities. Following truckers, construction workers, farmers and ranchers, grounds maintenance workers, and other agricultural workers rounded out the five deadliest jobs in the United States.
Truck driving can be difficult, as well as dangerous. According to some in the industry, when something does go wrong, truckers are often left with the blame even when they are not at fault. When these drivers are carrying 80,000 pounds, they are creating roadway dangers for everyone on the road.
While the number of fatal incidents is alarming, some experts claim that trucking is, in fact, becoming safer. Training programs have been expanded, and improvements to technology are cutting the risks of crashes. Although the industry is still a hazardous one, many believe it is on the right track towards fewer risks.
Even outside of the trucking industry, transportation incidents remain one of the leading causes of work-related deaths in the country. Traffic accidents accounted for 40 percent of all on the job deaths.
The rate of deaths grew in several industries, including logging, fishing, aircraft pilots, and roofers.
Early reports from 2019 indicate trucking fatalities increased last year by one percent. While the number only went up by a small amount, it did so while other traffic fatalities dropped for the third year in a row. As compared to 2018, 2019 is believed to have experienced 1.2 percent fewer overall traffic deaths.
