BRONX, N.Y. — A tractor-trailer truck driver died in a collision involving five vehicles according to the New York Patch. New York City police, fire, and rescue responded to the scene of the crash located at Randall Avenue and Coster Street in the Hunts Point neighborhood of The Bronx. The New York Daily News recited that the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. and might be the result of a medical episode sustained by the 67-year-old truck driver. The Daily News suggested that the medical event could have been a heart attack. However, authorities have not confirmed that theory. Only one other person suffered minor injuries in the pile-up.
Authorities who are investigating the fatal crash believe that the driver of a Freightliner tractor-trailer truck passed away while turning onto Randall Avenue from Coster Street. The driver lost control over the semi-truck, which jumped the curb and hit a telephone pole.
The big rig continued after striking the pole without stopping, NYPD investigators said. Evidence from the scene of the crash suggests that the tractor-trailer collided with a 2007 Dodge Caravan and a 2000 Ford pickup truck. The pickup truck then collided with another Dodge Caravan mini-van, which collided with a Toyota Camry. NYPD investigators said that none of the other vehicles involved in the chain reaction accident were occupied at the time of the crash.
One person who was sitting in the 2007 Caravan sustained neck and back injuries from the collision. The injured person went to Lincoln Hospital for treatment. First responders found the 67-year-old truck driver unconscious. They removed him from the truck and attempted life-saving measures. Physicians at Lincoln Hospital declared him deceased. The truck driver hailed from Milton, Delaware.
Detectives assigned to the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad received the assignment to investigate the incident. The detectives’ final report is not complete.
