Road safety bill
NY – According to Qchron.com, Councilman Bob Holden is looking to address problems caused by tow trucks speeding on New York’s roads, and trucks spilling gravel and concrete on the roads. The councilman has proposed several bills to change the situation.
One of the bills would make it mandatory for cement-mixing trucks to include spillage prevention equipment to stop the construction materials from falling into the roads. When the materials fall onto the road where they can create dangerous conditions and build into mounds.
Cement piles, gravel, and sand on the road can lead to accidents and cause damage to the fenders, tires and other parts of vehicles.
Another proposed bill would mandate that police officer had to educate and inform victims in car accidents about the Directed Accident Response Program which permits tow drivers to take vehicles from the road even without consent from the vehicle’s owner if the vehicle cannot be driven safely from the scene.
Under the bill, police officers would also be able to investigate incidents in which tow trucks were allegedly following or chasing.
The third bill would allow people to report incidents of illegal towing of vehicles and submit video evidence of the instances.
Holden said that tow truck drivers try to rush to the scene of accidents to beat out other trucks. The councilman also says that he has been nearly run off the road by these reckless drivers.
The trucks are only supposed to show if they are the ones called to the scene of an accident. Holden has requested that police set up fake accidents and fine drivers who show to an accident if another company was the one that had been called.
