New York throughway collision
BUFFALO, NY – According to Macon.com writes that over 20 vehicles were involved in a collision. The crash caused the closure of part of the New York State Thruway. The incident took place while the state was experiencing blizzard warnings and while people were told to avoid going out in the weather, which included wind, snow and sub-zero wind chills.
According to the police, some of the vehicles involved in the crash were large trucks. The sections of road where the crash occurred, between Buffalo and Rochester, had a weather-related truck ban in place starting Tuesday evening, and yet these vehicles were on the road at the time of the crash, which occurred at about 2 in the afternoon.
It is not immediately clear how many people were injured or how severely, but reports indicate that a state trooper was among the injured. Truck drivers who ignored the ban were warned by Governor Andrew Cuomo that they would receive tickets. Cuomo stated earlier on Wednesday that he had heard that there were still trucks on the road despite the ban, and he warned that police would be on the lookout for those drivers who violated the ban.
Fines for violating the ban include “fines up to $450, two points on the license and potential criminal charges.”
Some truck drivers said they were complying with the ban and said that the wind gusts were capable of flipping trucks over.
A complete ban on all traffic in Buffalo was later issued and was in effect from 9 p.m. on Wednesday until 7 in the morning on Thursday. The heavy snowfall led to the state sending plow crews from other parts of New York.
