BRONX, N.Y. — A mid-afternoon may be to blame for a twenty-car pileup on the Bronx River Parkway that left one person clinging to life and several others badly hurt. According to WPIX 11, the multi-car crash happened just after 2 p.m. in the Wakefield section of The Bronx. According to media reports from the scene, the vehicle damage to all cars involved was to the front, back, or both. First responders cleared numerous additional car accidents in the area of New York, on Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut as well due to the storm that blanketed the region with an inch of slippery, wet snow quickly as the volume afternoon traffic began to increase.
Crews with the Fire Department of New York, along with New York Police officers and EMS crews, responded to the chain reaction car crash on the Bronx River Parkway and East 223rd Street in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx. First responders treated at least eight people for injuries at the scene. One of the eight people hurt sustained potentially life-threatening injuries, although the FDNY did not share the nature of the injuries with the media. There is no update available on the condition of that individual.
The FDNY spokesperson discussing the crash could not say exactly how many vehicles were involved. The FDNY estimated at least fifteen vehicles were involved, but there could have been as many as twenty. There was no information available about criminal charges or traffic citations issued by NYPD, if any.
Dozens of additional accidents happened as the snow began to pile up in the tri-state area. No information about the condition of people involved in those accidents was made available.
First responders reiterated the importance of driving slowly and leaving plenty of space between cars when traveling in snow. Reducing speed will help decrease stopping distance and will help drivers maintain control over their vehicles.
