Weather plays a role in more than a million car accidents every year. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), about 21 percent of all car accidents are at least partially related to the weather. With an average of around 5,891,000 car accidents taking place every year in the United States, this means that about 1,235,000 car accidents each year are at least in part the result of inclement weather.
An average of 5,000 people die in these weather-related accidents each year while another 418,000 people suffer injuries.
The biggest factor in many of these accidents is wet pavement. Winter conditions cause far fewer crashes than rain each year. Fog only plays a role in about 3 percent of total weather-related crashes.
Weather is a factor in 15 percent of all fatal vehicle crashes, 19 percent of all injury-causing crashes, and about 22 percent of property damage causing incidents.
It is important for drivers to factor in the weather when they are driving. In many cases, drivers may need to reduce their speed to avoid being involved in a collision or losing control of their vehicles.
