STATEN ISLAND, NY- According to Silive.com., a crash took place on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in the Brooklyn-bound lanes on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, during the morning rush hour. The crash led to long delays.
Several MTA buses were running late as a result of police activity that was taking place on the Staten Island Expressway.
A collision occurred at about 9:07 in the morning. Injuries were reported, and traffic lanes were closed.
Rush hour traffic leads to congestion, and when roads are overcrowded, the high traffic volume can create a greater likelihood of car accidents. Of course, car accidents cause even more traffic delays.
Even minor car accidents can wreak havoc on traffic flows. Part of the issue is that car accidents, even fender benders, lead to lanes being blocked for some time and possibly drivers needing to pull to the side of the road. In more severe crashes, disabled vehicles, debris, and emergency responders, all create even longer delays.
Drivers who pass through an area around a crash can also lead to longer delays. Many drivers feel the need to gawk at vehicles on the roadside, or at the scene of a collision. This rubbernecking behavior causes vehicles to slow down, causing further traffic delays. Even traffic traveling in the opposite direction, which does not have any actual obstacles to avoid, often ends up delayed because of people slowing down to see what happened.
While rubbernecking can be irritating, and lead to long delays, it can also be dangerous. Drivers who are staring at the scene of an accident are not focusing on the roadway. This is a form of distracted driving which can lead to secondary crashes.
