Forced-air warming blankets such as the Bair Hugger, manufactured by 3M, have been the subject of debate regarding their association with increased infection risks and the introduction of contaminants into the site of surgery. The inventor of Bair Hugger, Dr. Scott D. Augustine, has said that the device poses a risk of bacterial infection.
He has spoken about these risks at professional events and has been involved in studies showing that the Bair Hugger may lead to infection.
In 2013, a lawsuit was filed against 3M alleging that use of the Bair Hugger during a hip replacement surgery caused an infection. The suit was filed on behalf of a Texas man who underwent the procedure in March 2011. He alleges that he needed 15 additional surgeries, including one to remove the device; he is seeking $1 million in compensation for damages.
When the Bair Hugger was used during the operation, the air picked up contaminants as it was discharged beneath the surgical table and then was recirculated into the joint, the lawsuit alleges.
