Bell Sports Recalls Giro Merit Helmets Due to Risk of Head Injury
Bell Sports, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has issued a recall for Giro Merit Bicycle Helmets. The recall, announced on June 8, 2023, affects approximately 15,000 units of the helmets sold in the United States, with an additional 1,465 units sold in Canada.
The reason for the recall is that the Giro Merit Helmets do not comply with the federal safety standard for bicycle helmets set by the CPSC. As a result, these helmets may fail to adequately protect the wearer’s head in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury.
The recall applies to Giro Merit helmets manufactured before January 2023. Consumers can identify the recalled helmets by the model’s name, “Merit,” displayed on the rear or side of the helmet. Additionally, the inner helmet sticker bears the model’s name “Merit” along with the code GH230.
To ensure consumer safety, owners of the recalled Giro Merit helmets are advised to immediately stop using them. They should contact Giro, the manufacturer, to arrange for a free replacement helmet or a full refund. Giro can be reached at 800-456-2355 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday. Consumers can also visit the Giro website at https://www.giro.com/news/cycling/merit-helmet-voluntary-recall.html or www.giro.com and click on the recall banner at the top of the home page for more information.
Fortunately, no incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled helmets thus far. However, it is crucial for consumers to act promptly to prevent any potential head injuries.
The Giro Merit helmets were sold at various stores nationwide, including Epicenter Cycling, Freewheel Bike West Bank, Velotech, and online platforms such as Giro.com and Backcountry.com. The helmets were available from September 2021 through January 2023 and retailed for approximately $220.
Bell Sports Inc., based in Scotts Valley, California, is the importer of these helmets, which were manufactured in China.
The recall emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety standards and guidelines when it comes to protective equipment such as bicycle helmets. It is the responsibility of manufacturers to ensure that their products meet the necessary safety requirements to safeguard consumers.
For updates and further information regarding the recall, consumers can visit the CPSC website at www.cpsc.gov or refer to the Giro website and contact details provided above.
