Senior Citizens Victims of Hit-and-Run
BRONX, NY – According to a pedestrian accident article posted on norwoodnews.org, senior citizens living in the Bronx are often the victims of hit-and-run pedestrian accidents. Last month, one of the hit-and-run accidents occurred at Daily Avenue and East Tremont Avenue. Another elderly woman was struck by a car as she was pushing a shopping cart. A third victim stated that an FDNY EMS ambulance hit her and left her lying helplessly on the ground.
In many of these cases, the suspects are caught on camera, which helps police officers identify and catch the perpetrators of hit-and-run pedestrian accidents. Oftentimes, time victims sustain severe head injuries, making it difficult for them to remember the accident’s facts and circumstances. A witness to the most recent pedestrian accident stated that she saw that the victim had a large bump on her head and that the victim could remember her name, but she did not know where she was at the moment.
In that accident, a local store captured the accident on its surveillance cameras, enabling police and witnesses to get a description of the suspect. Video from another camera angle recorded the hit-and-run driver stopping for a moment, looking back at the accident, and then speeding away.
Hit and run pedestrian accidents continue to be a problem as we move into the New Year. Police are searching for a vehicle that fatally struck a still-unidentified man found at Bruckner Boulevard and East 140th Street and in Mott Haven. The accident happened on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at around 10.50 in the evening. The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the accident.
The most recent Department of Transportation motor vehicle accident statistics reported 225 deaths in NYC from Jan. 1 through Nov. 30, 2020. This was a 3 percent increase over the year before. In 2020, there were 40,486 traffic-related injuries reported. At the borough level, the Bronx had 37 accident fatalities and 5,979 traffic-related injuries in 2020.
