BP gas station crash
BRONX, New York — A dull, dreary Sunday morning nearly turned into a nightmare for one customer of the BP gas station in the Bronx when an alleged drunk driver crashed into the gas station booth injuring the customer who just walked inside. The driver tried to pull away and flee the scene. Luckily, the man was not seriously hurt in the incident, according to Bronx News 12. An observant and concerned citizen sprang into action and gave chase to the driver attempting to abscond from the scene of the crash. The citizen trailed the fleeing driver and stayed with her until police arrived. The woman now faces criminal charges alleging that she was driving while drunk when she hit the building and that she ran from the scene of an accident.
Surveillance video from inside of the BP gas station booth in Mott Haven in the South Bronx shows how precarious the situation was when a female operator slammed her car into the gas station building. The video shows the customer walking in, and seconds later, the 22-year-old woman from Passaic, New Jersey crashed into the store. She got out, looked at the damage, and then re-entered her SUV. She then backed up quickly and tore her front bumper almost completely off of her car.
A man who had just finished gassing up his car saw what happened. He watched closely as the woman drove away from the scene. Being a citizen concerned for everyone’s safety, he hopped in his car and followed the woman. She eventually brought her car to a stop, and the concerned citizen who gave chase pulled in front of her badly damaged SUV so she could not drive any further. The front bumper fell completely off of the suspect vehicle at that point according to CBS New York.
NYPD officers assigned to the nearest precinct apprehended the woman and charged her accordingly. The officers took a sample of the woman’s breath and determined that her blood alcohol content was nearly 0.16%.
