SOUTH BRONX, N.Y. — According to Bronx News 12, a gas station customer and the gas station employees are lucky to be alive after a woman, who police say was driving with a blood alcohol concentration of more than two times the permissible limit, drove through the door of the gas station booth. The intoxicated female driver attempted to speed away after the accident. However, a witness reacted quickly and dd what he could to prevent her from fleeing the scene. The woman finally brought her SUV to a stop after the front bumper fell off. Police placed her under arrest and issued charges, which are still pending in court.
The gas station surveillance video captured the unbelievable scene that unfolded around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Video retrieved by police from a surveillance camera trained on the front door of the BP gas station booth on at E. 138thStreet in Mott Haven shows the maroon SUV slam into the front of the store. The impact shattered the glass front door. A man who had just walked through that door and into the store was hurt in the collision.
The video next shows the SUV back up and pull away from the mangled glass door. The SUV’s front bumper became entangled in some debris and pulled free from the front of the car but was not completely removed. Police say the woman got out and tried to drive away. A man fueling his car saw that the woman tried to flee, and he chased her in his car. He eventually got her to pull over. The front bumper fell off of the car.
Investigating officers from a nearby precinct placed the 22-year-old female from New Jersey under arrest. They charged with her leaving the scene of an accident and drunk driving. The man who just entered the store when the car struck the building went to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln for treatment according to Bronx News 12.
