BROOKLYN, New York — A dollar van loaded with passengers ran down a 42-year-old woman on a bicycle Saturday night. The driver of that van attempted to run away from the scene of the crash. The passengers on the dollar van reacted quickly and prevented the man from fleeing until police officers arrived at the scene. The responding officers placed the man in their custody according to a report filed by News 12 Brooklyn. Police officers said that the van versus bicycle collision happened around 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue U and Flatbush Avenue in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn. Charges against the 42-year-old van driver are still pending.
New York City police accident investigators are trying to determine why the driver of a dollar van attempted to run away from the scene of a collision between the van he was driving and a female bicycle rider. The responding officers said that she was riding a bike at the intersection of Avenue U and Flatbush Avenue when the dollar van ran her down. The police did not specify whether the bike rider or the van driver had the right-of-way at the time of the collision. However, what is clear is that the driver of the van tried to run away on foot from the scene. Quick-thinking passengers on the van stopped him from getting away. They held him at the scene of the bicycle accident until police arrived. Officers placed him in their custody a short time later.
Video taken of the accident scene shows the accident victim’s bicycle trapped well under the van. From the video, the scene appears as though the van driver struck the bike and rider, then overrode the bicycle. The video shows that the bike somehow was caught in the vicinity of the rear axle of the dollar van.
The bike rider made it to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County alive. The medical facility listed her in stable condition.
