Dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NY – According to Brooklyneagle.com, Localize.city found that 26 pedestrians and 29 cyclists have sustained injuries in eight of Brooklyn’s single-lane intersections.
Local streets do not have as much traffic as the multi-lane streets and do not have as many total accidents, but many of them present hidden risks. The average number of crashes at each of the intersections was one every 9 months.
One intersection marked as dangerous is located near the Williamsburg Bridge. This is where many vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists all funnel close together into a corridor creating many opportunities for accidents. The intersection located at Lawrence and Willoughby near the Fulton Mall is another of the intersections identified as the area’s most dangerous.
A traffic light was put in on Newkirk Road after numerous crashes took place in the area, and yet the intersections are still proving to be problematic.
The city made several improvements recently with respect to making safer bike-lanes near the Williamsburg Bridge, but the projects did not take place at the intersections that were identified as dangerous by the survey.
In many parts of the city, bike lanes provide little protection to cyclists. This tends to be the case more often in areas that are low-income. One recent fatal crash involving a cyclist took place on a road that had bike lanes, but the bike lanes were just a painted line that did little to protect cyclists from traffic.
Despite Vision Zero’s progress, there are still many cyclist and pedestrian accidents within the city. As cycling is becoming a more popular form of transportation in the city, the bike lanes are not yet adequate protection in many parts of the city.
