Box truck accident in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A box truck overturned on the inbound side of the Gowanus Expressway. The accident transpired during the height of the afternoon rush hour and clogged the busy road for nearly two hours and sent a line of vehicles trying to get into the Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn into New Jersey. The Brooklyn Reporter noted that two people sustained injuries in the incident and another vehicle may have been involved in the incident, but the role that the car played in the crash is unclear. The initial reports from first responders indicate that the injuries the two motorists suffered are minor in nature.
New York City Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services received a call for service around 5:00 p.m. directly them to the Gowanus Expressway for an overturned truck. The first reports said that the box truck rolled over and might have struck the Fort Hamilton Parkway overpass. The overpass is currently under construction. The flipped box truck blocked all traffic lanes, forcing commuters to wait while crews cleared the damaged vehicle. Traffic backed up for miles and affected the Verrazzano Bridge as well. Clearing crews observed fuel and oil leaking from the truck, which forced them to call in an environmental response team to clean the mess before the truck could be returned to its wheels.
Two people required medical assistance after the crash. Firefighters removed the two people from the box truck with minor injuries. Their current medical status is unknown.
According to the Brooklyn Reporter, another car might have been involved in the roll-over accident, but authorities were not immediately certain of that fact. The incident remains within the jurisdiction of the NYPD highway unit to investigate and decide how the crash occurred. NYPD has not released the final reports concerning the crash. There has been no determination if the police will cite anyone for causing this incident.
