BROOKLYN, NY- According to Newyork.cbslocal.com, a man was attempting to change a tire on his vehicle when he was struck and killed on a Brooklyn street on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The driver who struck the victim fled the scene of the accident.
The victim was identified as Losif Morgenshteyn, 65. Morgenshteyn’s family has not released a statement yet, and sources say that the grief-stricken family is not ready to talk about the tragedy at this time.
Police reports indicate the fatal accident occurred on Shore Parkway at about 6:30 in the evening. The vehicle that struck the victim was described as a white minivan. Witnesses stated that three people in the minivan got out to check on Morgenshteyn, but then got back into the minivan and drove away leaving the man to die. The people from the van did not even call 911.
Neighbors of the victim said that he was a loving father and grandfather. He was described as a very nice man.
The vehicle involved was abandoned approximately one mile from the scene of the incident. It was a 2014 Toyota Sienna from Pennsylvania.
Two men have been questioned in connection to the incident. The men were suspected of being passengers in the vehicle when it struck Morgenshteyn, but after questioning, the two were both released and were not charged.
The police are still looking for the driver. Anyone who has information about the crash or the suspect is asked to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers.
While New York City has had success in lowering the number of people killed in traffic accidents in the city, there are still a high number of hit-and-run accidents, and many of the guilty drivers are never apprehended.
