Investigators have posted a sign at the location of the incident in hopes that someone will remember seeing something and come forward with information.
The victim is the father of four children. Trejo has undergone one surgical procedure and could require more. Trejo’s brother says that the victim can hear his family but is not yet able to speak.
The NYPD is asking that anyone who has any information about the event contact the police department’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.
While New York City has been focused on reducing traffic-related injuries and deaths, the city has not been able to curb the number of hit-and-run crashes. Unfortunately, many drivers who strike pedestrians and then flee the scene are never apprehended or brought to justice. The overall number of hit-and-run drivers who are ever caught is about 1 percent. Most of these crashes involve property damage and no injuries, but the arrest rate even in the most serious crashes is low.
